Often, our grip is why we may not be shooting our pistol accurately or may be having difficulty with quick follow-up shots. Here are a few tips to help you improve your pistol grip and accuracy. In addition, if you notice you have to “fix” your grip between shots, the following tips will help keep your grip consistent:

  1. Make sure you have a high grip, up to the beavertail area on the pistol. Having a grip too low = point of aim and recoil control problems.
  1. Use a full grip with your pinky finger whenever possible – your pinky can provide up to 30% of your grip strength.
  1. Your trigger finger should be able to fall naturally on the trigger without grip manipulation – too much or too little finger on the trigger will affect accuracy.
  1. Make sure you can hit the other all necessary controls without changing your grip – like the magazine release, safety, slide release, etc.
  1. Your support hand should wrap completely around your strong hand, filling in the gap on the pistol grip.
  1. Stack your thumbs alongside the pistol slide, pointing at the target.
  1. Make sure your support hand is doing most of the squeezing – your strong hand is mostly used to balance the gun and pull the trigger.
  1. With a firm grip, torque your hands slightly outward, as if trying to unbend a horseshoe – this solidifies the grip and ensures proper grip tension.

Even if only one or two of these tips apply to you, give them a try and it’s likely that you’ll be able to improve your control and accuracy when shooting a pistol.

Good Luck!
