If you haven’t read H.R. 7910 (IH) – Protecting Our Kids Act, you’re going to want to because it implicates transformative measures for the everyday gun user. This bill is sponsored by Congressman Jerry Nadler of New York as one of the most substantial gun control acts this country has ever witnessed.  While every point of topic relates to gun control, it is essentially an omnibus bill for several other failed proposals of the anti-gun lobby.

Let’s set the record straight. We, by no means, are downplaying the loss of anyone’s life, especially a child’s.

The so called, “Protecting our Kids Bill” is a complete and over-reaching assault on the Second Amendment and the American people which skillfully uses the guise of “kids” to elicit support. This bill includes a section called, “Closing the bump stock loophole” and states that the individual shooting the firearm “MUST have a movement for each individual function of the trigger.” Does this mean that the shooter MUST now remove their finger from the trigger for each round to be fired? If that is the case, then every trained and competent firearms owner would face consequences for using the trigger on a semi-automatic firearm the proper way they have been taught – that is, keeping the trigger engaged with the finger and releasing rearward pressure until the trigger resets and then reapplying the rearward pressure to fire the next round. Would this make the individual a felon now?

In addition, the Bill demands a moratorium on “Ghost Guns”. The bill would require every firearm to be registered or destroyed within 30 Months. It goes as far as to call enthusiast manufactured receivers “untraceable Guns”. This bill is full of the usual anti-gun scare tactics employed during the 1994 “The Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act” or Federal Assault Weapons Ban. The name of this bill even sounds like the ban of 1994.

Interestingly, this bill states, “QUALIFIED INDIVIDUAL DEFINED. — Section 21 921(a) … The term ‘qualified individual’ means (A) a member of the Armed Forces on active duty; and (B) a full-time employee of the United States, a State, or a political subdivision of a State who in the course of his or her official duties is authorized to carry a firearm.” This reads as if government and state officials are the only “Qualified Individuals” permitted to carry a firearm. As always, there are more items tacked onto these bills than in a car dealership finance office.

QUALIFIED INDIVIDUAL DEFINED. — Section 21 921(a) … The term ‘qualified individual’ means (A) a member of the Armed Forces on active duty; and (B) a full-time employee of the United States, a State, or a political subdivision of a State who in the course of his or her official duties is authorized to carry a firearm.

Governments use tragedies to urgently pass poorly considered legislation. If you look at Canada and the UK, they are renowned for this tactic. In 1996, after the Dunblane school shooting in Scotland, the British Government used a senseless tragedy as the leverage to promote an expansion of the British Firearms Act, known as the Section 2 of the Firearms Act. This Act removed all access to semi-automatic firearms including handguns and rifles. The fact that British Olympians must travel outside of the country to practice their chosen sport tells you everything you need to know about how ridiculous the British law is, especially when you look at their firearm crime annually.

The United Kingdom still had 10,248 firearm related crimes in March 2003 and in March 2020 that number only dropped to 6,200. 26 years after the British Government passed some of the most aggressive and restrictive gun legislation in the world. They still have 6,200 gun-related crimes per year in a country of 67.22 million people. Even more shockingly, despite the use of varying metrics for violent crime, it can be estimated that England and Wales experiences 775 violent crimes per 100,000 people compared to the United States’ 383 violent crimes per 100,000 people.  Due to different ways of indexing, the researchers used similar metrics in the England and Wales near equivalent to the FBI’s definition of violent crime. The measures taken by the British Government simply do NOT add up.

On the contrary, the Brits witnessed a huge spike in knife-related attacks that lead to the outlawing of common pocketknives. You may ask, what did the criminals do next? They started using hammers. Without weapons to defend themselves, they experience a tremendous amount of violent crime which is unfortunate for the innocent citizens.

As the adage goes, bad people will do bad things with whatever object is available to them. The one thing that stops a bad person from doing bad things is good people willing to do necessary acts to protect good people, and the current U.S. establishment is hell bent of taking that ability away from us. The Protecting Our Kids Act is just the start.

If the government wants to do something to help in protecting our kids, rescinding Nancy Pelosi’s husband’s right to drive would certainly be a step in the right direction considering the DUI arrest rate is 287 per 100,000 people in this country…
