Every Dec. 15, we celebrate the ratification of the Bill of Rights including the one amendment that protects all of the amendments.

The Second Amendment is a God-given, constitution-protected right developed as a method to hold accountable those set on destroying our great Republic.


The Framers of the United States Constitution laid out an unheard-of governmental system, by both the period’s and today’s standards. Alongside this new Constitutional Republic were a few principles of liberty including one’s free expression, defense of justice and personal property, and, perhaps most importantly, one’s right to defend himself against the evils of a tyrannical government.

Despite anti-gun organizations, politicians, and members of the government manipulating the interpretation of the Second Amendment, James Madison could not have been more clear in his intentions:

“Americans need not fear the federal government because they enjoy the advantage of being armed, which you possess over the people of almost every other nation.”

President Madison experienced the atrocities of war and the imprisonment of personal freedoms by an out-of-touch, repressive system under King George III. We know that the Battle of Lexington and Concord–although it preceded the Declaration of Independence by over a year–holds significance as the first firearms confiscation attempt in American History.

While, today, we enjoy firearms for hunting or recreation, we cannot ignore that the intended design is for defense–defense of self, defense of family, defense of property, and defense of liberty and our way of life. 

Those Who Fear Firearms Disregard History

Interestingly, those with a fear of firearms are tunnel-sighted by the clause, “a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State” as the governing condition. This is a poor understanding because it relies on the basis that we should organize our arms for protection against state overreach which is, by nature, gun control. 

It can easily be said that the constant call for gun control is not only a baseless, emotional plea but a disregard for history.

As we continue to celebrate the rights that make the United States the most unique and prosperous country to ever exist, remember that the only secure way to protect this foundation is to be an advocate. 

To protect our right “to keep and bear arms”, we need to be on the frontlines of the current culture war against guns. There are actors today who have taken abhorrent actions against the Second Amendment as a means to carry out disgusting and diabolical deeds.

How To Win the Culture War Against Guns

To be victorious, there are a few actions you can take. First, and most importantly, become a responsible gun owner and follow the four basic safety principles for handling a firearm:

  1. Always treat firearms as if they are loaded.
  2. Never point a firearm at anything you’re not willing to destroy.
  3. Keep your finger off the trigger until it’s time to shoot.
  4. Always know what is in front and behind your intended target.

Secondly, support and defend your Second Amendment rights at all levels of government including city, state, and federal opportunities from local school boards to the U.S. Senate. Hold elected officials accountable for their actions, and support those that uphold our freedoms and rights.

The Founding Fathers were forward-thinking in their thoughts. On December 15, 1791 (only 231 years ago), our country ratified the Bill of Rights. The largest takeaway can be seen in the Ninth Amendment: 

“The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.” 

This amendment expresses that our rights extend beyond the Bill of Rights because it would be impossible for them to be all-encompassing. Our Second Amendment rights are reinforced by this amendment no matter what anti-gun proponents use for propaganda.
